The Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce Osprey Committee put a different twist on a favorite chamber event this year. The Osprey Awards have always been presented during a formal sit-down dinner. This year, however, the SMCC celebrated the recipients with a 2-hour cocktail event giving attendees a chance to mingle and enjoy delicious passed hors d’oeuvres while listening to live music played by Zoned Out with special guest Wayne Sos.

The Spring Lake Manor hosted the event and as usual provided a wonderful venue as well as outstanding service. An expansive buffet dinner was served complete with chicken, fish, pasta and a variety of side dishes, all that begged guests to return for a second helping.

The event began with welcoming remarks from Vickie Pekarchik of First Financial Federal Credit Union. Vickie serves as Osprey Awards Chair. A warm welcome was given by SMCC President Dana Gangemi of WayComm. John Spottke, Past- President and current SMCC Board Member stood as Master of Ceremonies, and all joined in pledging the flag. Following was the presentation of proclamations by Assemblyman Dave Rible.

Each year the most outstanding citizens and businesses are nominated to receive an Osprey Award. This year was no exception. The following individuals have shown an impressive amount of dedication in the fields of business excellence, community service, chamber service and young professionalism:

The Aspiring Youth Award was presented to Andrew D’Amico. Andrew was introduced by his guidance counselor, who also stood in Andrew’s place in acceptance. Andrew was a member of the National Honor Society all four years of high school while maintaining an A average throughout his high school career. Andrew worked as a reporter for the school news paper which received awards from the Columbia University Scholastic Press Society. He also organized a Phone Cards for Vets campaign each year during his four years of high school. He also coached youth basketball teams and is an accomplished musician. Andrew is currently enrolled in Boston College, majoring in English and plans to lead a life with volunteering as its core focus.

There was a tie this year for the award for Outstanding Community Service. The recipients were Senator Sean Kean and the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Senator Kean was elected to the senate in November of 2007, he serves on the Advisory Board of the Asbury Park Corps of the Salvation Army, he is on the Board of Directors of the Monmouth-Ocean Development Council, he is an Honorary Director of the Jersey Shore Performing Arts Center and is a Trustee of the Eden Wooley House in Ocean Township. Sean Kean has had an active part in creating a safe lifestyle for New Jersey residents including the NJ Clean Car law and enacting legislation that would increase the penalties for kidnapping a child under the age of 16. The following is the quote from Senator Sean Kean regarding the Osprey Awards:
“I am very honored to have been chosen to receive the Community Service Award by the Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce,” said Kean, R-Monmouth. “This is an esteemed award that has been given to many accomplished leaders in our community and it is a privilege to be one of those recipients.”

The FoodBank’s goal is to meet the growing need for emergency food in our current recession. The FoodBank has, this year alone, distributed over one million more pounds of food than in previous years. The FoodBank focuses on feeding children, the elderly and working and families in crisis. The FoodBank’s mobile pantry distributes food to families living in areas that do not have the resources to supply the needs of the hungry. In fact, they have distributed over 5.2 million pounds of food to 270 charities in Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The FoodBank encourages the community to visit www.foodbankmoc.org to gain awareness regarding how hunger affects our neighbors, how to donate, how to volunteer, and to follow upcoming events in the area to support the FoodBank and its mission. An upcoming event is scheduled for December 13 at Fred Astaire dance school in Wall NJ, where the community is encouraged to visit during the hours of 1:00-5:00pm to make monetary and food donations and shop for your holiday gift giving needs.

Both Jean Grippaldi and TD Bank were chosen to receive the Chamber Service Award. Jean is currently the Branch Manager and Assistant Vice President for Manasquan Savings Bank’s Meeting House Road Branch. Jean co-chairs the SMCC’s Business Expo and has served on the Osprey Committee for eight years. She also serves on the Board of Directors of both SMCC and the Wall Chamber of Commerce and serves as the secretary for the Wall Chamber as well. Jean actively supports the Kaleidoscope of Hope Foundation which supports the research and development for a cure for ovarian cancer as well as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the American Lung Association and the Jersey Shore Animal Center.

TD Bank’s focus is to be “America’s Most Convenient Bank.” TD Bank has a legendary focus on customer service and is unparalleled in convenience from Maine to Florida in over 1,000 retail locations. TD Bank is committed to an active involvement in the local community. TD Bank provides financial and other support to affordable housing initiatives, education and financial literacy and the environment. TD has a focus on improving the welfare of children and families.
The Rugby School at Woodfield’s dedication to student success made them the best candidate for the Business Excellence award. The Rugby School’s founder Mr. Donald DeSanto and his wife Loretta began this school with a focus of instilling compassion, empathy and a sense of community while providing a positive climate. The Rugby School stands 32 years strong, consistently striving for higher standards. Their focus on special needs students provides the students with an opportunity to grow academically, socially and emotionally.
The night ended with a wonderful performance by dancers from the Fred Astaire Dance Studio.
