Manasquan

Manasquan, at exit 98 on the Garden State
Parkway is easily accessible from both the New York and
Philadelphia areas. Because of its prime, Central Jersey, seashore
location and good climate, it has been an ideal summer resort and
year-round residence for centuries.
Our downtown area features a wide variety of shops,
restaurants, salons and services. This variety of shopping is the
reason many area residents and visitors "Shop Manasquan First".
Stroll along our Main Street and enjoy the friendly and relaxed
feeling our shopping district gives you.
Once you've visited Manasquan you'll realize why we are
called "The Treasure of the Jersey Shore".
History of Manasquan
Manasquan
was first settled as a part of Shrewsbury in the late 1600's. It
takes its name, Man - A - Squaw - Han (stream of the Island of
Squaws) from the Lenni Lenape Indians who were summer visitors here
for hundreds of years.
Manasquan, because of its prime Central Jersey seashore
location and good climate, has been an ideal summer resort and
year-round residence for centuries.
Manasquan has one mile of newly replenished, clean sandy
beaches . The sparkling clear surf assures sunbathers and swimmers
the ultimate in refreshing relaxation. With an abundance of fish,
Manasquan is a veritable paradise for surf and deep sea fishing.
Manasquan has an abundance of rental accommodations for
family groups . Many cottages are available at the beach area on
weekly, monthly, or seasonal basis. Most of these accommodations are
strictly summer in character. Reservations can be made in local
surrounding towns, at major motel and hotels. Call the Chamber of
Commerce office (732) 223-8303 for more information.
In addition to our mile of oceanfront beaches, there is a
complete and thriving business community centered around a small
town, main street atmosphere. The center has a variety of stores,
shops and services that meet the requirements of the entire family.
In 1609
Sir Hendrych Hudson sailed along our shores, landed betimes,
might slight exploration in the vicinity of Sandy Hook; an on Sept
2, 1609 made this entry in his "Log-Book of the Half Moon"; a very
good land to fall in with, and a pleasant land to see."
Upon this discovery the energetic Dutch laid claim to the
lands in what now are New Jersey and New York.
Long before Hendryck Hudson ever went a-voyaging, nay before
this doughty seaman shrilled his first baby cry, the "good and
pleasant land" had been discovered, explored and settled by that
immemorial legal process known as squatters' rights.
The Unamis branch of the Lenni Lenape Indians lived along the
river known as Manasquan and upon the Island since called
"Osborne's". They claimed the exclusive right to fish in and hunt
along the tributaries of the river. Manasquan, Maniquan, Mannisquan,
Manasquam, Squan, and Squan Village are mentioned in various old
records, among them a deed dated 1685. The name is said to mean "an
island with enclosure for squans."
We look
forward to having you in Manasquan, from all of us in Manasquan NJ.
Beaches of Manasquan

Manasquan has one mile
of sandy beaches located between the Manasquan Inlet to the
south and Sea Girt to the north. There are 12 separate lifeguard
stations with a flag system designating swimming, rafting and surf
boarding areas. In addition, there is a designated fishing area at
the Inlet Beach. The blacktop walk way spans 8/10's of a mile.
Manasquan has the only beach dedicated to the handicapped in
the Jersey Shore area. Elks Beach provides handicapped parking and a
wooden boardwalk to a platform on the beach. In addition, there are
several large handicapped chairs available for use on the beach and
at the water's edge.
At Recreation Beach, an area is set aside for volleyball,
wiffleball and general games. On Tuesday evenings, a local
volleyball league participates at Main Beach. All sports MUST be
played on Recreation Beach.
The Inlet Beach is one of the finest surfing beaches
on the east coast and many contests are held there throughout the
summer. Visitors from all over the country have visited Manasquan to
surf at the Inlet Beach.
At Pompano II Beach, a junior lifeguard program is sponsored
by the Manasquan Ocean Rescue and it provides instruction in water
safety and the essentials of life guarding to kids age 9-17.
Manasquan
Beach has 4 municipal parking lots and is within walking
distance from the train station which services the NJ Transit
System. Trains from New York City and Newark run a regular schedule
to Manasquan.
