Belmar

Belmar's History
The history
of Belmar is fascinating. The town was founded in 1872 by a
group of developers starting a vacation community. Then called Ocean
Beach, the town was christened as Belmar (French for beautiful sea)
in 1889.
There are many historically significant sites in Belmar's one
square mile. As you wander the tree-lined streets, you should not
miss Belmar's Public Library, 517 Tenth Avenue. This library, built
in 1914, was the model for all of the Carnegie-financed libraries
later constructed in the U.S.
The Belmar Fishing Club, at First and Ocean, is one of the few
19th century piers left in Monmouth County. A plaque commemorating a
Revolutionary War era salt works stands on Ocean Avenue and Sixth
Avenues.
The World War I Memorial called "The spirit of the American
Doughboy" is located in its own little park on West Railroad Field
Avenue, which is the official name for what locals fondly call
"Doughboy Park".
On February 4, 1930, Mayor Dillon acted on an idea proposed by
the American Legion to erect a suitable World War I monument. The
idea was approved and the land was donated. The park and statue were
unveiled to the public on Decoration Day, May 30, 1930.
The Belmar Historical Council recently raised funds to restore
the Doughboy historic memorial and insure this significant statue
will be around for generations to come.
Belmar's
Oceanfront
Belmar’s Oceanfront is a paradise for vacationers and
residents alike. Its clean, sandy beaches and boardwalk stretch from
First to Twentieth Avenues. Start your day with an early jog along
the tranquil boardwalk, where the sunrise greets a new morning. As
the day progresses, the Oceanfront evolves into a magnificent Mecca
of non-stop fun. Swim, surf, fish and sail in the sparkling Atlantic
Ocean. Shop to your heart’s content at the variety of specialty
stores. Take a break at one of the numerous eateries or taverns.
Enjoy rollerblading, biking, kite flying, the arcade, or just
bask in the sun while listening to the sound of waves breaking on
the sand. The Oceanfront is where you will find Taylor Pavilion and
the Huisman Gazebo–the centers for many of Belmar’s spectacular
shows and events. The Annual New Jersey Seafood Festival, the Summer
Band Concert and Social Dance Series, craft shows and exhibits are
just some of the activities you’ll find at Belmar’s famous
Oceanfront.
Belmar Marina
One of Belmar’s prized possessions is its marvelous Marina.
Known as “The Home Of New Jersey’s Largest Charter Fishing Fleet”,
Belmar Marina is a boat-lover’s dream. The Marina is located off of
Route 35, with its main entrance at Tenth Avenue. It overlooks the
scenic Shark River. The fishing and party boats sail 365 days a
year. All boats are privately owned and are available at reasonable,
competitive rates. Special rates are available for groups, children
and senior citizens. A variety of morning, afternoon, and night
trips are offered. Food, drinks, and fishing equipment are available
on the boats. Moonlight cruises are offered seasonally, Friday
through Sunday, from 8:00 PM to 9:30 PM. Breakfast and lunch are
served daily from the coffee shop on the premises. Restrooms and
free parking are provided.
The Belmar Marine Basin has a launching ramp and fishing
pier, as well as a bait and tackle shop to fill the anglers’ needs.
Rowboat rentals are also available. Adjacent to Belmar Marina is
Maclearie Park—complete with tennis courts, a playground, and a
soccer field. For detailed sailing schedules and other information,
call the Marina Office.
